The main function of massage therapy is to manipulate the muscles, tendons, ligaments and the connective tissues. The process enhances the person’s health and well-being. Massage therapy serves many purposes, ranging from stress and anxiety reduction, muscle relaxation, injuries rehabilitation, pain reduction and just promoting overall health and wellness of a person. Another end product is the stimulation of circulation and body system tonification.
Massage accomplishes the functions by manipulating the soft tissues specifically the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. To identify the physical and emotional needs of the client, the therapist uses his or her hand. During this process the therapist strokes the patient’s body with his or her hands, and this enables him or her to identify the likely source of pain and the tissue condition. There are two overall mechanisms that apply during massage process. One is the mechanical action that is created by moving the muscles and soft tissues of the body using stretching movement and pressures. Acids and deposits in these tissues are cleared disintegrating fibrous tissue and relaxation of the stiff joints.
Reflex method is the second mechanism, and it entails treating a part of the body and other parts of the body are treated in the process. Pulses travel from one part of the body to the other through the nervous system, and hence this is made possible. Hence, the therapists can apply pressure on the back to treat the stomach or the legs and so on. The difference between therapeutic massage and relaxation massage is that therapeutic massage aims at restoring the patients’ health while relaxation massage aims at restoring the person’s happiness.
There exists a lot of message types. Some examples are sport, pregnancy, reflexology, deep tissue and hot stone massages. All these are different and since therapeutic needs vary from person-to-person and from day-to-day, different people require different types of massages. A person needs to identify and understand the different procedures applied during the different massage for them to identify the best massage type they can go for.
Gentle massage induces relaxation and a sense of well-being to the patient. This is a result of stimulation of nerve endings in the skin. These nerves release endorphins and inhibits stress hormones, thus making the person have a feel-good sensation. On the other hand, stronger massage concentrates more on the circulatory system. They enhance oxygen and nutrient supply to tissues thereby relaxing them. Strong massage works on the lymphatic system which in turn transports the waste products away from the tissues. The end result of the massage therapy is enhancing a person’s well-being.
