A new Silicon Valley manifesto reveals the bleak, dangerous philosophy driving the tech industry

A new Silicon Valley manifesto reveals the bleak, dangerous philosophy driving the tech industry

In 1993, Marc Andreessen was an undergraduate at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he also worked at the US-government funded National Center for Supercomputing Applications. With a colleague, the young software engineer authored the Mosaic web browser, which set the standard for cruising the information superhighway in the 1990s.

Andreessen went on to cofound Netscape Communications, making a fortune in 1999 when the company was acquired by AOL for US$4.3 billion.

Since then, through his venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, the outspoken billionaire has become one of the most influential wallets in Silicon Valley. His investments – in companies including Facebook, Foursquare, Github, Lyft, Oculus and Twitter – have definitively shaped tech over the past 15 years. (He once described his approach as “funding imperial, will-to-power people”.)

Because of all this, it’s worth paying attention to Andreessen’s recent “techno-optimist manifesto”. Opening with the

Mercedes-Benz revealed a futurist hypercar concept called Vision 111 in Carlsbad, Calif. this week. While it pays homage to the iconic C111 prototypes of the previous century with its sleek look and gullwing doors, the real advancement, just like the C111, is with the powertrain technology.

For the Vision 111, the German automaker is talking about designing the vehicle around smaller, lighter and more powerful electric motors mounted right on the wheels. The car we see doesn’t have these motors in it now.

Because the axial-flow motor is a third of the weight and a third of the volume to create the same power, “we could imagine it to be part of the wheel and the unsprung mass, which

New Technology In Computer

The specific implementations of newly introduced iterative reconstructions on commercial systems vary widely, and are rapidly evolving. General Electric has introduced Adaptive Statistical Iterative Reconstruction , which uses a blend of filtered back projection images with iteratively reconstructed images that model the system noise. The main advantage of this technique is the ability to use lower radiation dose while maintaining image quality. General Electric also announced a Model-Based Iterative Reconstruction , which is a full iterative reconstruction that models not only the noise statistics, but also the geometry of the machine itself . MBIR is not yet commercially available in the US at the time of this writing, but preliminary experience shows that it has a dramatic effect on image quality in the poor contrast-to-noise situation (Fig.2). The main benefit of iterative reconstructions in modern CT therefore appears to be a potential for significant radiation dose reduction.
