Between March 2020 and June 2022, families in Toronto experienced some of the longest lockdowns in the world. Ontario schools closed for in-person learning for over 27 weekslonger than any other province or territoryand government restrictions on public spaces last for months. Parents were left to figure out how to manage work, child care and virtual school.

We interviewed mothers of young children to reflect on how they managed their children’s screen media practices during this cumulative time.

Our study is part of a larger collaborative research study, with researchers in Australia, the United States, China, Colombia, South Korea and the United Kingdom.

Children’s experiences of media consumption and production can vary entirely depending on their context, for example, due to government regulations or socio-economic differences.

Google rolls out passkey technology in ‘beginning of the end’ for passwords | Google

Google is moving one step closer to ditching passwords, rolling out its passkey technology to Google accounts from Thursday.

The passkey is designed to replace passwords entirely by allowing authentication with fingerprint ID, facial ID or pin on the phone or device you use for authentication.

Apple has started using the technology in iOS16 and the latest MacOS release, and Microsoft has been using it through the Authenticator app.

Users can create a passkey for each device they use, or the operating system or app used to manage the passkeys can be shared between the devices.

A cryptographic private key is stored on the device, and there is a corresponding public key uploaded to Google.

When a user signs in, the device must solve a unique challenge using the private key to generate a signature. The signature is then verified using the public key to allow a person to access

Australia’s transition to renewables is gathering speed, but there’s a looming problem with storage. We will need much more long-duration storage to get us through the night, once the coal and fossil gas exit the system.

We also need to find new and better ways to create heat for industrial processes. Renewables can supply much of that heat during the day, but energy storage will be required to meet the industry’s night-time heat needs.
