Atomic-scale semiconductor process technology and clean hydrogen technology join hands

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) are widely used for energy storage, transportation, and various applications, employing solid electrolytes such as ceramics. The efficiency of these cells relies on the performance and stability of their electrodes.

To enhance this efficiency, there is a requirement to fabricate electrodes with a porous structure. Unfortunately, existing technologies face challenges in achieving a uniform coating of ceramic materials within electrodes possessing intricate porous structures.

A collaborative research team, comprising Professor Jihwan An and Ph.D. candidate Sung Eun Jo from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), and others, has successfully produced porous electrodes for SOFCs using latest semiconductor processes. This research has been featured as a back cover article in Small Methods.

Economical way to turn captured carbon into clean fuel developed by Waterloo researchers

Researchers at the University of Waterloo say they have made a historic breakthrough when it comes to being able to capture carbon and turn it into sustainable, clean fuel in a way that’s economically viable.

Yimin Wu is a professor of mechanical and mechatronics engineering at the university and also the Tang Family Chair in New Energy Materials and Sustainability.

He says he and the researchers had three goals in their work:

  1. To mitigate carbon dioxide emissions, typically from industrial and transportation sources, that cause climate change.
  2. To make decarbonization financially feasible.
  3. Incorporate renewable electricity to develop new material for zero-emission transportation fuels and chemical feedstocks for industry.

Wu explained the findings to Craig Norris, host of CBC Kitchener-Waterloo’s The Morning Edition.

Federal budget sets aside $83B for clean technology tax credits – National

Serious money is heading for Canadian industries looking to reduce emissions after the federal government unveiled its answer to the US Inflation Reduction Act.

The spending commitments announced in Tuesday’s federal budget include tax credits for investments in clean electricity, clean-tech manufacturing, and hydrogen that together are expected to cost some $55 billion through to the 2034-35 fiscal year.

Total tax incentives amount to almost $83 billion over that timeframe when the carbon capture and storage and clean-tech investments credits announced last year were factored in, both of which saw minor boosts this round.
