Chicago to stop using controversial gunshot detection technology this year

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago won’t renew its ShotSpotter contract and plans to stop using the controversial gunshot detection system later this year, Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office announced Tuesday.

The system, which relies on an artificial intelligence algorithm and network of microphones to identify gunshots, has been criticized for inaccuracy, racial bias and law enforcement misuse. An Associated Press investigation of the technology detailed how police and prosecutors used ShotSpotter data as evidence in charging a Chicago grandfather with murder before a judge dismissed the case due to insufficient evidence.

Chicago’s contract with SoundThinking, a public safety technology company that says its ShotSpotter tool is used in roughly 150 cities, expires Friday. The city plans to wind down use of ShotSpotter technology by late September, according to city officials. Since 2018, the city has spent $49 million on ShotSpotter.

“Chicago will deploy its resources on the most effective strategies and tactics

Should Investors Buy the Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF Instead of Individual AI Stocks?

Should Investors Buy the Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF Instead of Individual AI Stocks?

The demand for artificial intelligence (AI) stocks may lead investors to ponder how to invest in this sector with minimal risk. This is a critical concern as AI stocks like Nvidia and Tesla have experienced massive sell-offs when those stocks fell out of favor.

Moreover, the AI industry is comprised of smaller stocks such as DigitalOcean and C3.ai. Although investors may see considerable potential for gains, unexpected occurrences often derail such growth stories.

Fortunately for investors, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) quickly capitalized on AI, and one of the better-performing funds is the Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF (NASDAQ: AIQ). The question for investors is whether the tech ETF can generate sufficient returns while reducing risk to minimal levels.

The Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF described

The Global X Artificial Intelligence and Technology ETF existed since May 2018. It owns more than 80 stocks associated with

How to Exploit Russia’s Addiction to Western Technology

How to Exploit Russia’s Addiction to Western Technology

After the Soviet Union collapsed, in 1991, Russia became almost entirely reliant on Western technologies. Western technology vendors—including Google, IBM, Microsoft, and Nokia—were initially eager to operate in the Russian market, which brought them billions of dollars in annual profits. For decades, these companies tried to remain neutral, ignoring Russia’s transformation into a militaristic dictatorship, in order to maintain their business. The Kremlin was happy to cooperate with Western vendors as long as they stayed out of politics and continued to reliably supply the required technologies.

But since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, in 2022, the landscape has shifted dramatically. “Business as usual” was no longer feasible, and under pressure from Western governments and public opinion, many Western vendors exited the Russian market. Left with few options, Moscow turned to its geopolitical ally, China, for technologies.

But Russia’s attempt to switch from Western to Chinese businesses revealed the impossibility of such

Tiffani May never saw it coming.

She was just a few minutes from home in North Las Vegas when a car came flying into an intersection at more than 100 miles an hour and crashed into hers.

“I remember getting hit, the sound of broken glass,” May said. “I remember seeing fire. And thinking, if I didn’t get out, my dog and I were gonna die right then.”

Nine people were killed in the Nevada crash in January of last year. Seven were
