OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently launched his latest venture: Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency that requires scanning your eyes with a device called an “orb.” The project, which was founded three years ago, is now ready for the world to experience. Altman’s vision is to establish “a new identity and financial network owned by everyone.”
In a blog post announcing the launch, the founder notes that if the project is successful, Worldcoin could drastically increase economic opportunity and present a reliable solution for distinguishing humans from AI online. This would be achieved by offering users a unique digital identity based on their iris scan and a currency given “simply for being human.”
To register, users are required to first download the World App and then visit a Worldcoin operator who uses the orb. The orb will scan the user’s iris to prove that they’re humans. Following identity verification, users are assigned a World ID.
“This lets you prove you are a real and unique person online while remaining completely private,” according to the blog post.
Altman also took to Twitter to show off the razzmatazz surrounding Worldcoin. A video shows off scores of people lined up at an Orb centre.

At a time when distinguishing AI-generated content from content by humans is growing increasingly difficult – driven by Altman’s own creation – Worldcoin can prove to be a vital tool with its unique identification technology. Altman also hopes that Worldcoin will eventually also pave the way to universal basic income (UBI) on a global level.

How to get your free WLD token
1. Download World App from your app store.
2. Open the app and create an account with your email and password.
3. To get a World ID, you will need to visit an Orb, a biometric verification device that scans your iris. You can find the closest Orb and book a time slot with the app or at worldcoin.org.
4. Once you arrive at the Orb location, follow the instructions on the device and scan your iris. The Orb will verify that you are a real human and create a World ID for you. This process is completely private and does not store any personal information.
5. After getting your World ID, you will receive one WLD token as a reward, where laws allow. WLD is the digital currency of Worldcoin that you can use to send and receive payments, buy goods and services, or exchange for other cryptocurrencies.
6. You can access your WLD balance and transactions on the app. You can also send and receive WLD by scanning QR codes or entering addresses.
